Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to bring my own sewing machine?
For most classes you don’t need to bring your own sewing machine, though you are welcome to if you’d prefer to work and learn on the machine you’ll be using at home! We have 6 Janome DC 2019 machines, 2 Singer Heavy-Duty 4432 machines, and 2 sergers available for student use. For some classes with a larger maximum number capacity we will have you select whether you’d like to use one of our machines or bring your own to class.

How do I know what materials I need to bring to class?
After you register for your class you will receive an email from us with a materials list and any information you might need to get ready for class. We send these out manually, so don’t worry if you don’t receive one right away! If you are planning to shop for materials and have not yet received a materials list, please email us at classes@boltfabricboutique.com and we will send you one!

Do you have a discount in the retail shop for students?
Yes! We offer a 15% discount in the Bolt Fabric retail store for students taking classes at Bolt. We also offer a 10% discount if you are taking a class elsewhere in Portland.

What is Community Open Sew?
Community Open Sew (Wednesday nights from 6pm—8pm) is an opportunity to use our studio space to work on your personal sewing projects. Come take advantage of our equipment and cutting tables while making new sewing friends! Community Open Sew is not a structured class and there is no formal instruction, but it is hosted by an experienced Bolt staff member who can offer assistance on beginning to intermediate sewing technique—if you need guidance on a specific technique (ie. invisible zipper insertion, buttonholes, etc) please email us in advance so we can be prepared.

The class I want to take is sold out! Is there a waitlist?
Yes! Please send your name, email, phone number, and the name and date of the class you’d like to take to classes@boltfabricboutique.com and we will add you to our waitlist.
